What Is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is a group of prolonged lung diseases that causes difficulty in breathing. On an estimation, around 30 million American people are suffering from COPD, and around half of them are unaware of their condition.

COPD if left untreated can lead to heart problems and other chronic respiratory infections.

What Are The Types Of COPD?

Following are the most common form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:

Emphysema-

This form of COPD leads to damage to your lung's alveoli(air sacs) which destroys their inner walls thus making them merge into one large air sac. The damaged air sac can't absorb the oxygen thus making your blood deprived of oxygen.

The damaged air sac makes your lungs lose their elasticity. This, in turn, gets the air trapped in your lungs which hinders the outward flow of air leading to shortness of breath.

Chronic Bronchitis

Bronchial tubes are lined with hair-like fibers called cilia which help in moving out your mucus. Chronic bronchitis leads to the inflammation and narrowing of the bronchial tubes that makes your bronchial tubes lose their cilia. This in turn makes you cough more which leads to the building up of mucus.

Refractory Asthma

This form of asthma is non-reversible which usually doesn't respond to asthma medications.

What Are The Symptoms Of COPD?

The coronary obstructive pulmonary disease causes difficulty in breathing. In most cases, people don't experience any symptoms at the beginning. Initially, you may get intermittent coughing and shortness of breath. As the disease reaches its advanced stage, one may experience the following symptoms:

  • Recurrent cough
  • Excessive mucus
  • Shortness of breath especially after exercise
  • Wheezing while breathing
  • Tenderness or tightness in your chest
  • Frequent flu or cold
  • Lack of energy
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive weight loss
  • Swelling in ankles, feet, or legs

What Causes COPD?

COPD can be a result of the following risk factors:

  • Long term exposure to air pollution, dust, or certain chemicals and fumes
  • Increased age (above 40 years)
  • Smoking or tobacco consumption
  • Deficiency in a protein called alpha-1-antitrypsin
  • Other genetic factors

What Are The Complications Of COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can lead to the following health complications:

Infections- COPD makes you more prone to various respiratory infections like flu, cold, and pneumonia.

Lung Cancer- COPD increases your chances of lung cancer.

Pulmonary Hypertension- COPD may increase the blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to your lungs which can make the situation worse.

Depression- COPD hinders your breathing ability which can restrict your day-to-day activities which may lead to depression.

Erection Issues- COPD may also restrict the ability of a man to have erections. However, this difficulty can be overcome with pills like cenforce 100.

Cenforce 100 is a sildenafil tablet that effectively cures the problem of having an erection in men. Cenforce 100 has been approved by the FDA and recommended by most doctors for treating erection issues.

How COPD Is Diagnosed?

Based on your underlying causes, symptoms, and medical history, the doctor will carry out the diagnosis by carrying out the physical exam and a few tests.

Before starting the diagnosis, the doctor may ask you the following questions:

  • If you are a smoker or had a history of smoking
  • If you are exposed to certain chemicals, irritants, fumes or smoke
  • Whether you have a family background of the disease or not
  • If you are suffering from any kind of respiratory problems
  • If you are consuming any prescription or non-prescription medicines or supplements

Besides asking the above questions your doctor may carry out the following tests:

  • Spirometry- During spirometry, the doctor will ask you to take a deep breath and blow the inhaled air into a tube attached to a spirometer. This test is carried out to measure how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can exhale the air out of them.
  • CT scan or a chest x-ray to detect any kind of abnormalities in your lungs, heart or blood vessels. These tests are used to detect the presence of any lung problems or heart failure.
  • An arterial blood gas test is done to measure the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood.

Other tests can also be carried out to evaluate other underlying symptoms.

How COPD Is Treated?

Though chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can't be cured permanently, treatment can ease the symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease. Your doctor may prescribe the following treatment methods to overcome the symptoms of COPD:

Medications

Bronchodilators- These drugs when inhaled open the blocker airways thus aiding in breathing.

Corticosteroids- These medicines are used to reduce the inflammation of the air passage.

Oxygen Therapy- This therapy is used to reduce difficulty in breathing, protect your organs from getting damaged and improve your quality of life.

Antibiotics- Antibiotics can be prescribed to treat bacterial infections.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation- This therapy includes counseling, disease management, and a few lifestyle changes.

Additionally, the doctor may even prescribe you medicines for complications related to COPD. For example, men with COPD may experience erection difficulty and can be prescribed Sildenafil(Cenforce 100) tablets.

Cenforce 100 is a PDE5 inhibitor that boosts the blood flow to your penis thus causing an erection. Though cenforce 100 is quite helpful in providing you with firm erections, it often leads to some side effects.

Besides side effects, cenforce 100 also shows some drug interactions. Cenforce 100 may lead to major side effects thus making the situation worse of taking while suffering from COPD. So it is highly advisable to consult your doctor before taking cenforce 100.

Surgery

When medications don't work for you the doctor may carry out any of the following surgery based on your symptoms and underlying cause:

Bullectomy- This surgery is used to remove the large spaces known as bullae that form when air sacs collapse.

Lung Volume Reduction Surgery- This aids in removing the damaged and diseased lung tissues.

Lung Transplant- In extreme cases, your defective lungs need to be replaced with healthy a one.

NOTE: Self-medication can be dangerous even if you are familiar with medications like Cenforce 100. Consuming any medicine without consulting the doctor will affect your condition.
